The Ibiza Preservation Foundation (IPF) works towards a sustainable future for Ibiza and Formentera by supporting local initiatives focusing on both land and sea. As the popularity of the Balearic Islands continues to grow, the IPF has been doing its utmost to maintain the balance between tourism, development and the protection of natural resources. On its 10th anniversary, we joined with hundreds of avid supporters to celebrate the organisation’s successes to date and learn of its plans for the future of this beautiful island.
Ibiza residents and island visitors gathered in the hundreds at the beautiful private estate of Los Olivos to join together underneath the stars for a night of feasting, celebrating and dancing to honor a decade of the incredible work of the IPF. Sponsored by a whole host of international brands, as well as local businesses and producers, the guests were handsomely fed by Le Grande Bouffe in true Ibicencan style with the help of a giant BBQ and mammoth paella pans. Sponsors including ABSOLUT Vodka, Mumm and local wine producers Ibizkus kept glasses refreshed whilst guests mingled and danced together to enjoy entertainment from local flamenco guitarist Paco Fernandez, as well as a lengthy set from female DJ duo Blondish – all of whom are well-known supporters of the charity.
Everyone knows we all enjoy a great party here in Ibiza, but the event was also a much-needed platform to continue to raise awareness of the incredible steps that have been taken and that are continually required to maintain the beauty and sustainability of the island that many now call their home. The ethos of the IPF is that by preserving the island’s natural beauty and resources, we will not only protect its wildlife and nature but also contribute to the community’s well-being and prosperity. It was heartwarming to see the huge level of support from local businesses including hotel chains, beach clubs, restaurants, real estate and concierge specialists.
More than €1,098,000 has been raised in the last 10 years, over a quarter of which in the last year alone. The charity is gathering pace in recognition of its recent work that has included the commissioning of major studies in water and solar energy, which are crucial for the island’s future. It has also succeeded in preventing no less than four gas and oil exploration projects nearby and gained protection for the meadows of Posidonia that surround the Balearic Islands.
In addition to protecting the environment, there has been a welcome championing of local farms, producers and artists and the IPF continues to find ways to encourage support to ensure these business can continue to flourish. We left the event with a great sense of pride, feeling blessed to call Ibiza our home and thankful to be surrounded with so many generous and wonderful people keen to make a difference and work collectively to sustain the White Isle and its neighbouring islands into the future.
